Major fashion news happened last week. Did you catch it? The Wall Street Journal reported that, “[b]y means of a brief communiqué of barely four lines, His Majesty the King of Spain, Don Juan Carlos I, informed the Spanish prime minister on June 2 of his decision to abdicate from the Spanish throne. In accordance with constitutional practice and following parliamentary formalities, his son, the Prince of Asturias Don Felipe de Borbón, a well-qualified young man who is loved and respected by all Spaniards, will succeed Juan Carlos.”
That means there’s a new queen in town, girls! And, oh snap!, she’s got it going on in the fashion department.
Future-Queen Letizia is everything we could want in a queen — she is 42 years old (a really good age), she is a mother of two beautiful girls, she clearly loves her daughters very much (she is very tender with them when they are in public), she is smart, she had a fantastic and well-lauded career before becoming a princess, she has a killer figure, she’s got great hair, she is glamourous, she is a commoner, she shops at the grocery store and the mall, she shops at Zara and Mango (I am swooning now). But, unlike Kate (Princess Catherine), also a commoner and also fond of the down-to-earth approach to royal life and the high street brands (pretty sure that means “mall-ish” brands), Future-Queen Letizia is not afraid to be a little daring and hip with her fashion. And she is not afraid of an open-toe shoe or of a bare leg. Hip, hip hooray! (I thought Princess Diana had liberated us from the buttered leg (hosiery) and the prison of closed-toe shoes but Kate has definitely been “having a go” at bringing them back).
In short, Letizia seems a thoroughly modern queen for a modern age. Below, I have teased out some of her arguably best looks. Good news is that there is sure to be more to come . . .
