a little havana . . .

stylebriefs took a quick weekend trip to rosemary beach, florida, for a much needed jolt of vitamin d and an opportunity to unplug for a just moment. the weather was great and the coast was not crowded, which made for a very relaxing weekend. the opening of the pearl hotel has certainly helped solidfy the sense of place at rosemary — not only is it great that SOMETHING is operating (as opposed to the abandoned shell that the hotel was since its construction) — but it’s got a pretty fabulous groove going–at least as it looks from the outside.

we decided to give the rooftop bar, sol luna, a try on friday evening and then the restaurant, havana beach, a shot before we headed out of town yesterday. here is my review . . .

sol luna rooftop bar at the peal. it's hard to see the ocean except for this particular seat. also, the screen was playing espn when i was there which made it feel more like an o'charleys than a high end beach bar. . .

this place has a definitely un-rosemary vibe. it was a little too much on the cheesey end of the spectrum if you ask me — with the oversized tv playing espn, I just kind of was not getting the cool, high-end, overlooking-the-ocean, beachy vibe i had been expecting. the drink menu was a little ho-hum as well. with everyone in the world crafting sublime cocktails with homemade elixirs, bitters, small batch liquors, and a hundred other things you never knew about — there is so much opportunity to be “farm to table” in the bar space these days and i think it’s a real miss on their part. they wouldn’t even bite on a request for a skinny margarita . . . (and you know how i love me a skinny margarita) . . . but maybe it was an off night. i will give it another try . . .

havana’s veranda was a major hit: a gorgeous place to enjoy fabulous food

by contrast, this place got it right. from the farm-to-table guarantee, to the beautiful veranda, to the “breakfast all day” portion of the menu, i was delighted with havana beach (straight off the beach) for lunch before we left town yesterday. the service was divine. the skinny margarita was an “of course” (and, then, delicious on receipt). and the food was super yummy! i had the frisee salad with added grilled grouper. . . . hubby got the burger, which I am assuming was good because there was not a bite left for sampling. the iced tea had a light note of “passionberry” and the go-cups were delivered without fuss before we got up to leave. seriously, i can’t wait to go back. . . .

so, all and all, a miss and a hit. i’ll take it! especially since havana beach just seemed to hit all the right notes. . .
