you’ve got to love a night when the rivalry between queen bey and kim k. plays out on the red carpet in a sheer beaded and feathered show down right in front of our very eyes. looks like it’s lucky for kim that anna put a ban on selfies after all. (can you just tell kim kardashian not to take a selfie?)
each year, the dresses at the met gala are editorial, intense, over-the-top, jaw-dropping, and even crazy. but, fashion’s biggest night is for me often fashion’s biggest fail. like when you try just a little too hard to look cool that you end up looking kind of stupid and you know it and you keep trying to fix it only you are making it worse instead of better?
it’s raw, un-distilled fashion with a strong after-taste — fashion for the sake of fashion — and not fashion as a means of looking awesome.
the theme this year was “china: though the looking glass” and the accompanying costume institute exhibit will explore how china has influenced fashion over the years. there were not literal takers on the theme this year as we have seen in years past, but there was a lot (A LOT) of red. and then everyone else kind of ignored the theme.
below, i have hooked you up with my picks, pans and the bey/kim scandal. but tell me, who was your favorite? and did anyone disappoint?
picks . . .
sjp in custom h&m and philip treacy millinery. fierce. i like it.
zendaya in fausto puglisi. nailed it.
kate beckinsale in diane von furstenburg looking stunning.
j.law in dior. love her. love her make-up. not feeling the dress.
georgia may jagger in gucci. my pick for best dressed again this year. amaze-balls. i am so crazy about this.
karlie loss nails it in black with emerald earrings. note to self: large emerald earrings work well with black evening dress. recall this same combo looked great on angelina jolie a couple of years ago.
lily collins in chanel. not exactly crazy for the dress but SHE looks delightful. she is really, really pretty. and, i love her birdcage veil.
kate hudson in michael kors. so, kate looks good but i think we all agree she has def looked better. having said that, i feel like this dress does a nice job of referencing the theme without overdoing it. i think it is her hair that i really don’t like.
gaga. i think we can all agree that it’s been a while since she looked this fierce. love it.
gigi hadid in diane von furstenburg. kind of boring dress but she makes it work.
oh snap! naomi has got it going on! madonna, kim, bey, . . . they all wish they could be as wickedly awesome as naomi.
don’t ask me why i love this. but i do. i think it would look ridiculous on anyone else. but allison williams makes it work. beautifully.
vanessa hudgens in h&m (what????). MAJ-or. perfection.
katy perry in moschino. this is so super crazy that i can’t quite get my head around it. but, i do love the ‘do. and katy’s face looks fierce.
lily aldridge in carolina herrerra. swoon. love this.
riri in her amazing technicolor yellow coat. dying to know what her dress actually looked like.
scandal . . .
this is what beyonce wore . . .
which looks an awful lot like what kim coincidentally decided to wear . . .
which also coincidentally looks almost identical to what beyonce wore to the met the year that she had blue ivy . . .
pans . . .
kerry washington. just because the dress is prada does not mean it is a good dress. like, AT ALL.
dakota johnson in chanel. fresh from the peggy olsen school of beauty.
kate holmes in zac posen. love the dress. hate the hair. someone is going to be hating that heavy bang in about 24 hours.
miley cyrus in 3.1 phillip lim. nope. wrong.
okay. it’s not that j-lo’s dress is not awesome in a kim k. and bey kind of way. but, look at her make-up. something is wrong. she almost looks like a tranny doing j-lo. what is it??? are her eyebrows too light? did she not do eyeliner?? why does she look so weird?
okay. this is the look reese makes when she is sucking in her stomach on the red carpet. i challenge you to find any other red carpet picture of her with any other look on her face. and also, she has done this dress about 10 times. i done with it.
no comment. this one speaks for itself.
oh, madge. this is getting awkward. WAY too much filler action going on. and, it’s kind of sad that she is advertising her “rebel heart” album on her dress. insert sad kitty cat emoji here.
selena gomez in vera wang. note to self: when you are taking heat for extra lbs (and especially when it is not warranted), do not pull out the fitted white dress for the next public appearance. i think you can see what i mean.
okay. i am a fan — a HUGE fan – of mk and ashley and especially the row. but, this is heading quickly into grey gardens territory. remember when they were all cute and smiley at the met?
and then when they turned fierce and amazing fashion icons?
