it’s not that every one or every place in the 6th arrondissement of paris is chic. that is definitely not the case. it’s just that they have more than their quotient. you just can’t walk around anywhere in the world and literally stumble across this many incredibly chic and cool people and places. not greenwich village. not silver lake. not brera. not wynwood. not hackney. not williamsburg. no where. and that is huge. . .
and it’s the guys, really. when the guys are playing their fashion game up this high, i think the ladies have no choice but to follow — or lead, as it may be.
and perhaps there is a synergy. the 6th is chocked full of so many hip little cafés, brasserie and nouveau gelato places that more people want to locate their businesses there and more cool people are drawn there that it all feeds on itself.
if you really want to hook into the cool, french chick vibe, you have to get how to be parisian where ever you are: love style, and bad habits by anne berest, audrey divan, caroline de maigret, and sophie mas. a “welcome” gift from some of our super cool friends in paris, i loved, loved, loved this book. incredibly spot on and hysterically funny, if you love paris or covet the look of the parisian femme, you will love this book! (get it here.)
below, i hooked you up with some more snapshots of the hot guys, cool chicks, and hip brasserie, cafés and other chic places within the 6th. my only regrets are in the ones that got away. enjoy!
p.s. happy birthday to my sweet sis in NOLA!!
let’s start with a hot guy. they all have the white button-down, dark, narrow leg jean thing down. this guy is pulling off an hermès belt in a totally “i could care less” kind of way that would totally belie the american male. then there is the well-groomed facial hair. that’s a thing. it’s pretty universal. and i don’t think it’s a deal-breaker anymore.
she just about killed me with her coolness. . . the fringe, suede purse, the denim jumpsuit, the stan smith adidas . . . she could go down in the hall of fame for coolness. and props to the chick crossing the street with her straw hat and strapless black dress. not too shabby. (even though black is not even a thing any more).
rue de seine at the peres et filles brasserie. . . there was a major fedora scene . . . lots of hats in general, but definitely heavy on the panama hat.
this guy. he’s totally busting me taking his picture. but, he’s got it going on. couldn’t just let him pass. again, the clipped facial hair coupled with the well-tailored look. well done.
many, many cool chicks on bikes. . . also, navy is huge. NO ONE is wearing an LBD this summer. EVERYONE has a LND (little navy dress). and i mean everyone. i do not think they were even selling black dresses in the stores and certainly no one was wearing them in the streets. . .
cool chicks around every corner. . . no lulu lemon workout clothes here.
i really, really love the simplicity . . . everyone seems to have found a well-edited aesthetic.
except for this chick. i would have laid money on the fact that she was american . . . but no, she was totally french. because she was just heading down the street to grab a bite for lunch. and this was just her look for the day. . . might as well take the hot pink backpack today, right?
loved the colors at le hibou. the deep turquoise was amaze-balls . . .
if you want to be super cool in paris, get a motorcycle. and then carry your helmet around.
perfectly on fleek for summer. . . if her shoes were not dirty she could totally be from the pages of a vogue editorial. . .
the night life in the 6th is just a delight. when the lights come on and the streets fill up it’s pure magic. . .
huge girl crush on this chick. wow. love, love, love the white blouse and shorts for a hot summer evening out.
here she is standing later in the evening . . . and then, her friend with the off the shoulder navy ensemble, was totally chic as well (although not as practical a choice). . .
the friend had walked over to the cafe le buci to meet her boyfriend earlier. and, i promise i was not stalking her. pretty cool crowd here as well.
if you are wondering what all the cool kids are drinking in paris, it’s not red wine. nope. every table almost without exception held an iced bucket of rosé. and, the occasional mojito. . .
loved her little chloé-ish frock and her glads. . .
don’t you want to just grab that open table and order a bottle of rosé and chill for a minute?
young guys in fab suits were literally a dime a dozen around 6pm each day. . . have i mentioned that facial hair is HUGE?
are they not the cutest pregnant couple? love her chic LWD and flat mules.
so many cool chicks on bikes . . .
this chick emerged from the metro (!) looking like a million dollars. loved her pink bag, aläia heels and chic bob.
hate to say i told you so (i did, here) but stan smith adidas are where it’s at in paris. . .
so, here’s me workin’ hard to rock a full-on super-casual paris look. adidas, cos, goyard. wax on, baby, wax off!
i am a sucker for edith piaf’s la vie en rose but, i have to admit, the cuban remix is sublime. . .
i know . . . i wish my video clip was longer, too. just when we got to the good stuff.
