Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has always fascinated me. From the commoner marrying a prince to her seeming like the kind of person that you could totally hang out with over wine (I mean tea). But this week I’ve been especially captivated by her fashion. It seems to me that she has taken herself out of her comfort level some what and truly embraced the Indian culture. The colors, the lace, the embellishments…all incredible.
Looking at some of her looks, I’ve tried to find similar items that us commoners can wear.
The beautiful lace Jenny Packham dress (one of her favorite designers) is definitely a show stopper. If you have a Bollywood event like Kate then this Joanna August Newbury Cap Sleeve dress in Sea is fantastic and with the chiffon you will feel like a princess. Another alternative is this BCBG Maxazria Lace ball gown. Now admittedly it is a little more risqué than what the duchess is wearing but check it out. I think you will agree that the color of my dress choice hits the bullseye of Kate’s Jenny Packham.
For a meeting with young entrepreneurs Kate wore this Emilia Wickstead dress in crisp white. She looked like she could be chairman of the board even when she had this Marilyn Monroe moment. This Chinti and Parker Pintuck Shirtdress with the nip tucked waist will take you to the boardroom or to ladies luncheon. Plus as Caroline told us the other day, the shirt dress is where it’s at. This Ulla Johnson dress just screams “lady” although if you are a lady there will be no screaming. But the eyelet trim by the shoulders and the small floral pattern will take you from a picnic to church. Finally, this Badgley Mischka Dress is just what you want to wear to the Board Room or change up your earrings and your shoes and you’re headed to a cocktail party.
Kate’s look for a game of cricket is probably one of my favorite looks. Not because I’m ever going to play cricket but because I can totally see myself wearing an Anita Dongre maxi dress, but be forewarned there already is a two week wait. Here is For Love and Lemons Juliet Maxi Dress which has all the colors as the Anita Dongre dress that Kate wore as well as the maxi flow. Ok this Mara Hoffman dress doesn’t have the same colors as Kate’s Anita Dongre but the maxi dress with the off shoulder and star blasts designs totally means we could wear it playing cricket.
For a lunch with the Prime Minister Kate wore this Temperly London dress in a beautiful green lace. What I particularly love about this dress is that Kate had it tailored for her to make it princess appropriate. Not as much as leg is shown in Kate’s version but she makes it work. I’m afraid I couldn’t find a similar green with the lace but this Alexis dress has the same feel and I think you will get the same effect. Also Self Portrait is always a safe bet for a beautiful lace dress. This Self Portrait dress just makes you feel like you could walk down the red carpet even if you are just going to a luncheon or to a party.
I can’t wait to see what she is wearing tomorrow. Stay tuned.
PS. For the last two nights as I’ve been working on this I’ve had on the background, Ken Burns documentary about Jackie Robinson. As one of the commentators said in the program, Jackie Robinson’s baseball skills were one thing but his impact on our country was truly life inspiring. Here is an article about the documentary but if you get the chance watch it. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan the historical aspect is worth your time.
