A little history lesson

Linly Graham Heflin

Linly Graham Heflin

Do you know who Linly Heflin is? Let me tell you a little bit about her as she had an incredible impact on my home state. She was born January 6th, 1887 to Mr. And Mrs. John Franklin Graham.

When she was 23 years old, she married Harrington Phillips Heflin. He  attended Vanderbilt for college and law school.  (a good man!) The couple moved to Birmingham where Linly became an impact on her town at such a young age.

When World War 1 started in 1917, she felt compelled to help.  She organized a group of women to help roll bandages. However, just a few short months later, in January 1918, she came down with the flu and died. Shortly thereafter her friends got together to start a philanthropic organization for their friend, Linly. To raise money they had a Mardi Gras Ball. With money raised they funded the Linly Graham Heflin Ward at Children’s Hospital. Today The Linly Heflin Unit’s motto is:

“Educate a woman, and you educate a family”

As part of that motto this incredible group of women have given over three thousand four year scholarships totaling more than five million dollars  to deserving young Alabama women so that they may  attend colleges and universities. The Linly Heflin Scholarship Luncheon and Fashion Show which was first sponsored by Loveman’s in 1959 continues to be its primary fundraiser. For over  25 years Linly Heflin has partnered with well known Birmingham clothier Gus Mayer.

This year Linly Heflin Scholarship Fashion Show will be held on October 5th with cocktails and hor d’oeuvres being served at 5:30. The best part of the night’s activities is the featured designer is Rachel Zoe (Bananas!). You will get to see her Fall 2016 Fashion Line come down the runway.

You can get your tickets here. It will be a fabulous event and the best part you will be helping send well deserving women to college in order to further their education. Because when you “Educate a woman,  you educate a family”
