Not everything that glitters is gold…sometimes it’s silver

The other night I was meeting a friend for drinks after work and she came in wearing the most fabulous silver shoes. She had worn them to work with a simple pencil skirt and short sleeve blazer. I was intrigued by the pairing and she explained to me that she treats her silver heels like a neutral. That comment has stuck with me. I love it. So I immediately went home and bought these silver heels from Schutz. I’ve worn them with a pencil skirt like my friend, with pants and even jeans. As a side note I came across the Schutz brand when I was looking for a new tan pump. I love Stuart Weitzman pumps but honestly I treat my pumps pretty harshly so I needed something at a lesser […]

Mixing It Up

Almost Time for Spring…but Not Quite Yet…. This time of year I get wooed by all the pretty Spring florals but I know that I’ve got a few more months of cooler weather.  I also know that if I wait til March or April to buy Spring items then all the fantastic pieces will be picked over. So what is a girl to do? I like to pair my Spring florals with my Winter staples.  For example take this Equipment blouse and pair with a floral sweater such as this one from Zara. Or take that floral blouse like this one from Banana Republic and open it up over a turtleneck in grey or black. Another idea, is to take your BLANKNYC suede moto jacket and pair with a sleeveless blouse like this […]

Pleat away

I just returned from NYC where we went to the US Open. Such a fun time! Even better, it was actually cool ( I mean long sleeves at night cool) which got me in the Fall Into Fashion mode. When not at the Open we traversed the streets of New York looking for those fall looks. Today’s look comes courtsey of the pleated skirt. I’ve been hesitant about this one since I’ve felt that pleats can make me look hippy but I’m going to change my mindset. But again it comes down to proportions. I found this silver pleated skirt at Zara that I plan on pairing with my JCrew cashmere shell in black and strappy sandals in red from Pedro Garcia. Pair the outfit with a long statement earrings like these […]

Transition Piece: The Pretty Top

With September staring us in the face and fashion month starting in about two weeks, my mind has turned to Fall.   I have been searching my closet in the past week for transition pieces. . . something that doesn’t exactly scream “summer” but is still lightweight and comfortable in 90 degree weather.  And so, I have come to the pretty top.  There are a lot of great looking tops out for Fall that are picking up the vibe designers like Rosie Assoulin, J.W. Anderson, and Johanna Ortiz are putting down – structured cotton, origami or ruffle detailing, voluminous, and super feminine.  And, the great thing about the ruffle and fold is that they can both camouflage the breadth of a chesty girl (like myself) and balance out the top-half of the flat-chested, all while […]

White Denim Workaround: The Summer Skirt

It’s about to get, like, a million degrees, y’all.  For the second installment of this White Denim Workaround series, I propose the inexpensive summer skirt (and a tank top or crop top (oh, yes!!).  It’s a pretty fab and comfortable way to beat the heat in something other than suffocating white denim. So, the skirt brings with it an issue: to tuck or not to tuck?  You’ll just have to call an audible.  It’s always going to be an issue of personal pref, neither is right or wrong.  And, sometimes a side knot can be chic.  And, sometimes, really a nice, somewhat conservative crop top is the way to go.  You read that right. All of those issues depend on fabric, friction, the waistband and the pooch factor.  You do you on this.  Any […]

Chanel or Zara? Can you tell the difference?

Guess which of these three pairs of sandals is NOT Chanel????  If you guessed the middle one, you have a pretty keen eye for fash, but, come on. . . who else has an eye as keen as yours???  It’s sandals like this that make us all repeat the mantra, “You gotta love Zara.”  If you are like me and totally diggin’ the Zara sandals, find them here.  If your ready for the big leagues, find the two Chanel sandals here and here. XO, cg

Low Tied . . .

Let’s face it:  even though it doesn’t really seem like the MVP of your whole pool sitch, the pool/beach shoe is a total baller in its own right.  What we are really looking for here is something completely effortless that kind of goes away. . . And, if it doesn’t?  Well . . . you’re left looking like a rookie — straight from the farm leagues, right?  I mean how hard do you have to work to get it wrong??? Actually, it’s a lot easier to get it wrong than you would think.   Here’s where my head is:  I am not wanting a challenging buckle situation.  I don’t want a clunky wooden clog.  I don’t want thick or heavy ankle straps.  No heels over an inch high or a steep pitch.  I love a slide. […]

Track Star

Guess what is a really big thing this Spring??  Track pants.  Hold up, hold up, hold up. . . don’t peace out on me until you have heard me out.  I can feel your eyes rolling even as I right this, but just hang with me for just a second. . . Last September during the Spring 2016 shows, Claire Waight Keller sent five or six different looks down the runway at Chloé that included extremely chic track pants — that’s right, track pants with the stripes down the side — and then Alessandro Michele sent a sweet pair of embroidered bell track pants down the runway at Gucci.  Then, Tory Burch included two different types of track pants in her Fall 2016 show last month.  And, now, open any fash mag […]

Spring’s Best Transition Piece: The Trench

I am certainly not the only one who loves a trench.  We all do, right?  But, I feel that the trench is especially well designed for pre-spring days that are cooler (often by twenty degrees or so) during the morning.   When a lightweight trench is layered on top, it can be cinched tight to provided added warmth by morning and thrown over the shoulders or left un-tied by afternoon. There are some amazing pieces out there this Spring.  I consider a trench a wardrobe basic that warrants a hefty investment.  Having said that, there are some gorgeous options that don’t necessitate a deep purse scrounge.  Try this one from Topshop, this one from Zara, or this one from Club Monaco. My favorite one out there right now is this one from Theory, which […]

The bomber jacket made a showing last spring and, from the looks of the pre-fall and resort collections, it’s here to stay for several more seasons.  There are a ton of great options out there at really fab prices.  Also, most of the options are in lightweight fabrics, which make the bomber a perfect layering piece as we start the transition into warmer weather toward the end of the month and early next month. Check out this one and this one by Topshop, this one by StellaSport for Adidas, this one by Zara, and this one by Gucci (which sort of galvanized the look as a keeper when it hit the Resort Runway). And, don’t be tempted to save the bomber for your jeans.  I pulled together a mood board to help […]
